This collection brings together printed documents in criminal procedural law housed in the CRAI Law Library como en el Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The books span the period from the sixteenth century to the early nineteenth century, before the codification of criminal procedural law later in the nineteenth century.
One highlight of the collection is a reprinted edition of the notable work Praxis criminalis et civilis… by the Catalan legal expert Lluís de Peguera. This edition appeared in Barcelona in 1649 with additions by the legal scholar Acaci de Ripoll. The work is a practical guide that sets out the fundamental aspects of civil and criminal procedure. Its importance stems particularly from its theoretical considerations of justice, the mission of rulers, and the duties and qualities required of judges. At the time, the work represented what the codes of criminal and civil procedure signify today
