This collection brings together printed documents from as early as the sixteenth century held at the University of Barcelona (in CRAI Law Library and CRAI Rare Book and Manuscript Library). These include general legal resources, such as charters, practices, and books of customs and privileges, as well as commentaries and studies by renowned legal scholars in their eras.
One highlight of the collection is a first edition of Variarum resolutionum iuris Caesarei, pontificii et municipalis principatus Cathaloniae by Jaume Càncer, which was published in Barcelona, 1594-1608. The collection also contains one of the many later editions of Càncer’s book appearing in Lyon in 1670. Editions published after 1635 are much more extensive than the earlier ones, because material was added. The volume, which stands as a fundamental text on the application of Catalan law, is highly practical in the presentation of its subject matter. Càncer was one of the authors most frequently quoted by legal scholars of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
